Corda Music - Jane Austen's Music - The CDs

CDs of Jane Austen's Music were available on the ISIS label. Unfortunately because of contractual problems between the directors of ISIS (over which we have no control), most of these discs are no longer available, and there seems no prospect of acquiring a re-issue. The only disc still available from us is the ISIS CD026 Music for Love and Marriage. Because the CDs were widely distributed to National Trust Shops, the " Pastimes " chain, English Heritage, etc., you may still find a copy of them elsewhere.

See the end of this file for our latest CDs: Goethe and the Guitar

and click here for the CD " Endearing Young Charms " The Guitar Songs of Tom Moore (1779 - 1852)

Works by Abel, J.C.Bach, The Earl of Abingdon, John Stanley, James Hook and Mozart, performed by Katharine May (fortepiano) Jenny Thomas (flute) Ian Gammie (guitar and bass viol) Michael Sanderson (tenor voice and violin), Elinor Bennet (harp) and Martin Souter (organ)

Beautiful songs and instrumental music from Georgian England, a selection of favourites to be found in most musical households around 1800. Songs by Haydn, Thomas Arne, Michael Arne, Mozart, Shield and Boyce, instrumental works by Dussek, J.C.Bach, Abel, Haydn and others, including the eccentric Earl of Abingdon. The Windsor Box & Fir Co (Katharine May, Jenny Thomas, Ian Gammie and Michael Sanderson).

Piano Sonatas by Haydn, Pleyel, Clementi, Eichner and Piccini performed by Martin Souter on a fortepiano of the period.

Works by Linley, Boyce, Dibdin, Sterckel and Kotzwara ('The Battle of Prague') performed by The Windsor Box and Fir Co: Katharine May (fortepiano) Jenny Thomas (flute) Ian Gammie (guitar and bass viol) Michael Sanderson (tenor voice and violin), with Derek McCulloch (narrator in The Battle of Prague).

This is an outstanding CD containing 24 songs from the period 1795-1820, settings of poems by Johann Wolfgang Goethe (plus a few by his great friend Friedrich Schiller), using original guitar accompaniments from the time. The singers include the distinguished tenor and member of the Hilliard Ensemble, Rogers Covey-Crump, with Noemi Kiss (soprano) and Michael Sanderson (tenor). Three different guitars of the period are used, all played by Ian Gammie. Several of the songs also have obbligato parts for flute and for fortepiano (played by Jenny Thomas and Katharine May respectively)- the combination of guitar and piano was much more common at this time because the keyboard imstrument was much quieter than the later 19th century monsters. The disc contains fascinating settings of many poems later used by Schubert; he must surely have known (and possibly even played) some of these songs, as they have clear pre-echoes of the Schubertian voice. The full retail price from Corda Music is £11.99 plus postage. Most of the songs are now published, see Goethe Songs
